10 Steps to Building a Pool

STEP 1 The site: After design consultation with customer and permits have been received, the contractor stakes out the pool.

STEP 2 - Excavation: The hole is dug with large equipment. In most cases, it takes about one working day to complete the pool excavation and remove the soil.

STEP 3 - Plumbing: Plumbers install equipment to clean and purify the pool water efficiently

STEP 4 - Steel Placement: Steel-reinforcing rods are placed inside the excavation, up the sidewall, into the bond beam and around the skimmers. When wired together properly, these rods add to the strength and long life of the pool shell.

STEP 5 - Pool Shell: Gunite, a concrete mixture, is pumped under great pressure to bond tightly around the steel reinforcing rods. This results in a reinforced steel and concrete pool of superior strength.

STEP 6 - Coping: Craftsman install the coping—or the "lip" of your pool—around the pool's perimeter. For some pools, cantilevered decks that extend right to the pool's edge are used instead of coping.

STEP 7 - Tile: The tile is installed along what will be the waterline of the interior of the pool.

STEP 8 - Electrical and Gas: Electricians hook into the home's main electric service and connect filtration and lighting systems. If the pool has a gas-fueled heater, gas lines are also installed.

STEP 9 - Decking: The decking that surrounds the pool can be concrete, brick, stone, grass or many other materials. This is the final stage before the pool shell finish is applied and it's ready to be filled.

STEP 10 - Waterproof Finish The crew covers the surface of the pool with a durable waterproof finish (often plaster) that seals it and provides a beautiful finishing touch.
