Equipment & Extras

Some equipment is required to run a swimming pool.  Do you know about the extras?
There is a variety of additional equipment including lighting options, pool cleaners, automatic controllers, etc. that may interest you.

Automated Control Systems

You want your pool to be a place of relaxation and fun, not another chore. An automated control system gives you fingertip control of a number of functions such as filtration, automatic pool cleaning and landscaping lighting - all from a control center inside your home.

Pool Covers

Protect your family and your investment.  Limit accidental entrypool cover by children and pets during the winter months while keeping the pool area clean and attractive, it also protects your pool's interior finish from the damaging effects of the weather and maintains proper chemical balance underneath its protective shield. Also, the use of a pool cover makes re-opening your pool faster and easier as it reduces the build-up of dirt and debris.

  • Safety covers: Safety covers are tight fitting covers which are pulled taught around the pool's perimeter and are held in place with hooks or stakes located around the pool. These covers withstand huge weights and allow rain water to drain while keeping debris out. Black plastic is often placed between the water surface and cover so that small debris doesn't sink to the pool floor and allow mildew to grow.

  • Solar covers: These covers are placed on the water surface to trap heat and warm the pool water. Automatic and manual varieties are available.

Automatic Pool Cleaners

Pool cleaners should be simple to use and require minimum attention to give pool owners the freedom to relax and enjoy their pool. We recommend and install various types of automatic pool cleaners depending upon your pool.

Built-in Cleaning Systems

Installing a permanently built-in cleaning system will reduce maintenance time and costs and provide your pool with automatic, silent, systematic, programmed cleaning every time your pump is turned on.

High Performance Pumps

Don't let winter's chill or summer's heat come between you and heat pump your pool. With a heat pump, your pool's water will always be at the perfect swimming temperature. Compared to gas, oil or electric heaters, these heat pumps operate up to 80% less, saving you hundreds of dollars in energy costs each year. Also available is a dual heat/cool unit that takes the chill off the water when it's cold, and cools off the water when it is uncomfortably warm on those sizzling hot summer days.

Water Purifiers

Using a Nature2™ water purifier from Zodiac Pool Care can cut your chlorine use by 50-80% and keep your pool water pure, clean and odor free. It’s powered by waterflow, using no electricity and no moving parts. Nature2’s patented mineral process traps bacteria, algae and viruses, leaving your water brilliantly clear and soft. No more stinging eyes, dry skin, damaged hair, or bleached bathing suits and towels.

D.E. Filters

D.E. filters work hard to keep your pool sparkling clean and free from impurities. With superior strength and reliability, these filters stand up to the toughest conditions. You can go longer between cleanings, so you have more time to enjoy your pool.

Lighting Options

Landscape Lighting:
Lighting can have a dramatic and practical effect in a landscape. Selected back lit trees and well-lit public areas make the space comfortable day and night.

Fiber Optic Lighting: One of today's hottest choices in lighting is fiber optics. Light is generated from a remote source and is transmitted through a clear cable. Because the electric source is never near the water it is a safe option. Color disks at the source create the light and you have the option to choose colors. Fiber optic cable can be run inside or outside of a pool or spa.

Halogen Lights: New to the market are halogen lights available with color wheels that let you change the color of light in your pool. These new lights fit most existing in-pool light fixtures.

Cartridge Filterscartridge filter

Cartridge filters stand up to harsh pool chemicals and environmental elements, thanks to its chemical-resistant fiberglass reinforced polypropylene tank. The innovative lock ring design fully engages and locks with just 1/3 of a revolution, making it much easier to use than other split tanks. Plus, its coreless cellular media design makes cleaning a snap.

Pool and Spa Tiles

We offer an extensive line of tiles through National Pool Tile Group that will let you express your sense of taste and imagination in designing your pool or spa. Tiles are typically installed along the water line of your pool or spa, but can also be used as stripes, accents, customized mosaics or as edge trim on steps and swimouts. Selections range from solid tiles in rich hues or earth tones, floral or aquatic designs, or a wide variety of geometric or contemporary patterns in varying sizes, shapes and textures. You can choose tiles that blend soft-colors and multi-patterned designs that create a distinctive 3-dimensional appearance; tiles with a Mediterranean flair to accent your architecture; or mix and match tiles to suit your own sense of color and style

Fountains & Waterfalls

Pools aren't just pools anymore. They are part of your backyard environment. Because many people look at their backyard as extensions of their homes, they put similar efforts into designing their outdoor spaces.

  • Fountains: Both floating and permanent built-in varieties are available. Both dress up a pool like they dress up a flower bed.

  • Waterfalls: Cascading water into a pool is just one way homeowners are using their pools to create total landscape environments and the sound of running water is always relaxing. They can be as simple as a small spillway into the pool to an elaborate hillside waterfall complete with boulders and lush vegetation.

Diving Boards and Slides

A favorite especially with the younger set. Keep in mind diving boards require minimum pool depths and widths.
Patios and Decks

The most important thing to keep in mind when choosing a surround is the surface needs to be as non-slippery and cool as possible.
  • Wood and Stone: Premium woods and stones are often the most expensive option. A premium stone patio can run between $20-$35 per square foot. Low-end wood decks requiring little support will average $17-$18 per square foot.

  • Wood Like Decks: Vinyl, Trexx and other wood-substitute products are becoming more popular - especially for their minimal maintenance requirement. Vinyl runs approximately $23 per square foot and $36 per linear foot for the railing. Recycled decking products, such as Trex, average $19 per square foot.
  • Brick: Bricks will average $13 per square foot for a basic non-mortared pattern. More complex designs and bricks set in a mortar base will run closer to $20-$25 per square foot.

  • Concrete: Typically the most economical choice for a pool deck averaging $4-$7 per square foot. Exposed aggregrate and brush finishes are the most popular styles. Stamped concrete is also very popular offering a variety of color and design choices. This method tends to run about $12-$15 per square foot.
  • Cement Coating Products: This choice is popular if you have an existing concrete patio. A layer of product is spread on top of the existing surface. These products average $7-$10 per square foot depending on the color and design.
    • Outdoor tiles: Typcially more suitable for milder climates, tile can create a very dramatic effect. Be sure to choose a non-slick, outdoor tile suitable for your climate. Prices can vary tremendously.
    • Grass: While a minimal patio surround is needed, grass is a viable alternative around a pool. It is cool and slip resistent. Keep in mind that when cutting you want to avoid grass clippings in the pool.
Landscaping

There are three primary goals to consider when landscaping a pool: beautification, privacy and shade.
  • Beautification: Nothing is as stunning as a lush landscape. Your choices are nearly endless. Colorful flowers brighten the landscape and soften hard surfaces. Visit our Landscape Planning Guide for Ideas.

  • Privacy: Creating a sense of privacy around a pool or spa is important. It is not easy to relax when you feel exposed. Trees, shrubs and lattice structures and fencing are all options.

  • Shade: Creating a refuge from the hot sun is important. Trees, shrubs, structures such as pergolas and gazebos and oversized market umbrellas are options. Besides offering escape from the heat, they often create a focal point for the space. When selecting trees choose non-messy varieties that won't drop in your pool.

Fences

Most zoning ordinances require pools to be surrounded by an enclosure at least 4 feet high. Other restrictions may limit the type of fence eliminating models which are easy to climb.

  • Wood: Available in a variety of designs. Require regular maintenace and painting or staining.

  • Wrought Iron: Durable and available in a variety of designs. Requires periodic maintenance and painting.

  • Vinyl: A new and increasingly popular product. Requiring minimal up-keep, vinyl fencing is available in a variety of styles and designs.

  • Aluminum: The most expensive and most durable and maintenance free fencing. Available in a variety of designs.

  • Chain link or Cyclone: The most economical fencing. Note that some ordinances do not allow chain link enclosures because they can be easy to climb.
